Fast, fun fundraising will once again be the order of the day for an action-packed weekend at the Mac Park Cancer Council Cup

The Mount Gambier Motor Cycle Club is gearing up for another thrilling edition of the Seniors (Over 45s) Road Race Meeting, to take place at SA’s historic McNamara Park Raceway on May 17-18.

Last year’s Cancer Council Cup raised an impressive $13,000, almost doubling the $7000 total from the inaugural edition. With many motorcycle racers impacted by cancer in some degree, it’s a great way for the riding community to contribute to an important cause, raising funds for the SA Cancer Council to support regional patients travelling to Adelaide for treatment.

Three categories are up for grabs for keen entrants – lightweight, heavyweight and sidecar – but the final podium spots are not even remotely based on speed, with the Cup’s unique format combining race times with fundraising efforts to ensure that both riding skill and sheer generosity play their part in determining the winners. In fact, in 2024, club president Alex Trnovsky proved that strong fundraising skills could be just as valuable as racing ability after being nearly last on the track but stepping up to the top step on the podium in the heavyweight category!

Spectators are encouraged to donate to their favourite riders, which adds an even more exciting and unpredictable element to the competition; everyone has a chance to be part of the action, both on and off the track.

This year will also see the introduction of another great initiative – Mac Park’s Greatest Shave – where volunteers will shave their heads or beards to support the cause. For anyone interested in taking part, it’s not too late so please reach out as soon as possible to the organisers! Plenty of raffles will also be held on the day, with a range of awesome prizes –including an annual subscription to AMCN.

The meeting is open to riders aged 45 and over, with sidecar passengers eligible from age 16 (as of May 16). So whether you’re a seasoned Mac Park competitor or a first-timer, all riders and spectators can enjoy a relaxed and rewarding weekend of racing and charitable giving in equal measure. Entries are available through Ridernet, and further details can be found on the club’s website at macparkraceway.org.au or on its Facebook page.
