Rising star launches himself into title contention with the first ever Brazilian win in the intermediate class

The Moto2 race at Assen began with Ivan Ortola grabbing the holeshot, but he ran wide at Haarbocht, allowing Diogo Moreira back into the lead. Aron Canet quickly moved past Manuel Gonzalez for third, while Deniz Öncü surged from 10th to 4th. Senna Agius slipped back from 7th to 11th in a difficult start.

On lap two, Joe Roberts attacked Gonzalez into Turn 1, opening the door for Barry Baltus to pass as Gonzalez dropped to eighth. Canet then made a bold move on Ortola at Strubben and, moments later, barged past Moreira at De Bult to take the lead. A crash for Izan Guevara at Stekkenwal affected Agius, who fell back to 15th.

Öncü made an impressive overtake on Ortola into Ramshoek, while Baltus served a long lap penalty, promoting Gonzalez back into eighth. By lap five, Canet led from Moreira, with Öncü in third. Gonzalez began finding pace, the only rider dipping into the 1’35s, rebounding after his slow start.

As Canet and Moreira broke away, Gonzalez moved forward—passing Dixon, then Roberts, and finally Öncü on lap 12 to take third. Although he showed race-winning pace late on, the gap to the leaders was too big to recover.

Moreira shadowed Canet, clearly waiting for his moment. On the penultimate lap, Canet ran wide at Turn 2, gifting Moreira the lead. Despite late pressure, Moreira held on through the Timmer Chicane on the final lap to secure a historic win—the first ever for a Brazilian in the intermediate class.

Gonzalez completed the podium ahead of Dixon and Roberts. Ramirez claimed sixth, Arenas seventh, with Lopez holding off Agius for eighth. Holgado rounded out the top ten. Canet’s mistake cost him the win, but Gonzalez’s smart recovery secured him another important podium and kept his title campaign on track.

After Assen, Manuel Gonzalez remains atop the standings with 159 points, just five ahead of Aron Canet on 154. Moreira’s victory lifts him to 128 and firmly into championship contention. With the title fight now a three-way battle, and momentum shifting race by race, the second half of the season promises fireworks.
