Intact GP vow to improve aerodynamics as top speed and tyre wear issues leave Agius battling to gain positions

Senna Agius left Barcelona frustrated as Manuel Gonzalez delivered a measured victory at the Catalunya round and extended his championship advantage.

The race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was won after a tense fight with Celestino Vietti, the pair split by just 0.203s at the flag, with Izan Guevara charging from 11th on the grid to complete the podium on home soil. Agius again showed the speed to run much closer to the front before tyre trouble and a lack of top speed turned his race into damage limitation.

Agius started from the fourth row, which left him with work to do immediately. Up front, Vietti and Gonzalez disputed the holeshot, with the Italian leading through Turn 2. Ivan Ortola settled into third early, while Guevara and David Alonso made immediate progress from outside the top 10. Agius also began moving forward and eventually pushed Alonso Lopez back another place to move into seventh.

From there, he became part of a lively battle in the chasing group and spent laps seven and eight dicing with Alonso over sixth. At that stage he remained in the fight, but the race began to shift as the laps built and tyre management became critical. While Vietti pressed on at the front and Gonzalez carefully stayed within range, Agius’s race began to unravel.

The Sydney native had approached the opening laps in a controlled way and had settled into the chasing pack without abusing the tyre but the rear deteriorated suddenly as the race went on, leaving him unable to attack when it mattered.

The contrast with his underlying pace was striking. Agius’s best lap of 1’42.119 was less than a tenth slower than Gonzalez’s best, yet his top speed of 291.8 km/h was the equal slowest in the entire field. On a circuit where overtaking and tyre conservation are closely linked to track position and efficiency, that was a major handicap.

Even so, Agius salvaged a top-10 finish in difficult circumstances, and his team boss Jürgen Lingg made clear both what went wrong and where the focus now lies.

“We absolutely must work on the aerodynamics now, as his bike is simply too slow, which makes everything harder. And we need to work on getting him further up the grid in qualifying again so he can run with the lead group in future, the speed is definitely there! We have a test here in Catalunya on Tuesday, which comes at just the right time to work on those details we need to improve.”

While Agius fought his way through those issues, his teammate executed the race perfectly. Gonzalez judged the distance with precision, allowing Vietti to set the early pace before turning up the pressure in the closing stages. After stalking the Italian through the second half of the race, he made his decisive move at Turn 1 with three laps remaining. Vietti stayed close as both riders wrestled with spinning rear tyres, but Gonzalez controlled the final lap and sealed his second win of the season.

Afterwards, an emotional Gonzalez described it the best race of his career so far. Vietti had gone hard early, but Gonzalez resisted the temptation to respond too soon, found his rhythm and preserved enough performance to strike late and then manage the race from the front.

Behind the leading pair, Guevara’s recovery ride was enough to beat Ortola for third. Daniel Holgado finished fifth, David Alonso was sixth, Filip Salač took seventh, Alonso Lopez eighth and Luca Lunetta ninth, leaving Agius to round out the top 10 after a race that promised more.

Gonzalez now heads to Mugello with an 18.5-point championship lead over Guevara with 104.5 points, while Agius slips to 4th behind behind Vietti on 65 points.

Manual Gonzalez – Winner
“I’m over the moon because it was the best race of my life! After crossing the finish line, the emotions were incredible. I was shouting and crying. It might seem like a silly thing, but it’s the reward for all the work I put in at home and in training, always trying to improve and give more. I’ve been doing the same thing for years and never giving up. Even when conditions aren’t on our side, I try to push even harder and show what I can do. Today’s win was like a gift, as it came at exactly the right moment. We’re fighting for the championship, and these points are super important to extend our lead a bit so we can breathe a little. The race itself was truly perfect, and we’ll try to do it again. Since the start of the season, we’ve been taking small steps every day, and we’re getting a really good package back in terms of the bike’s set-up and my riding. Today was mainly just about strategy – how to manage the tyres. Vietti pushed really hard at the start, while I just tried to keep the pace without pushing too much. Towards the end, I struggled a bit with the front tyre and nearly crashed several times. Overall, we handled this weekend very well, and that’s down to our hard work. A huge thanks to the team for another great job.”

Senna Agius – P10
“I had a really good start; I couldn’t have been doing much better in the opening laps, and I settled into the group well. I wasn’t pushing, but rather trying to stay calm on the bike and not stress the tyres. When I got into seventh or sixth position, something strange happened with the rear tyre from one lap to the next. It wasn’t a gradual drop-off, and it wasn’t something we had not spotted during practices. I was definitely riding smoothly, and it’s not easy to take as I didn’t do anything wrong in the first part of the race. A top-ten finish on a bad day like this is alright.”
