Marquez sets bludgeoning pace at the front, Miller fourth on Yamaha debut

The first MotoGP official practice session of 2025 is in the books, and Marc Márquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) wasted no time stamping down his authority, setting the fastest time with a 1’29.423. His brother, Alex Márquez (Gresini Racing), also looked comfortable early in the session, though he ultimately ended up seventh, 0.521s off.

Franco Morbidelli (VR46 Racing Team) impressed with a late push, securing second place, 0.158s behind Márquez. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) provided extra motivation for Yamaha, finishing third with a 1’29.765, while Jack Miller (Pramac Yamaha) looked immediately comfortable, slotting into fourth. Quartararo and Miller’s times suggest the pre-season promise from Yamaha may not be another mirage.

Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) had been Marc Márquez’s closest competitor through the first half of the session, but he eventually settled for fifth, building Aprilia’s momentum despite Jorge Martín’s absence. His rookie counterpart Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Racing) also impressed, finishing sixth ahead of Alex Márquez, showing solid early pace.

Reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) had a tough session. Struggling with braking issues, he ran wide multiple times and could only manage 10th, 0.718s off Márquez’s benchmark. Considering his usual tendency to start slow and build over the weekend, this might not be too concerning yet—but the margin to the front suggests he has work to do.

The KTM camp had a disappointing showing, with none of their bikes cracking the top 10. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was sliding spectacularly into corners, but it didn’t translate into a competitive lap time, as he finished 16th. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) fared even worse, down in 19th, while Enea Bastianini (Tech3 KTM) was only 20th. KTM’s ongoing struggles with rear tire wear will be a major focus heading into the rest of the weekend.

Home hero Somkiat Chantra (LCR Honda) received plenty of support from the crowd, finishing a respectable 17th. Meanwhile, it was a tough start for Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Racing Team), who finished 18th, and Raul Fernández (Trackhouse Racing), who struggled to 21st, only ahead of Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia Racing).

As the session wound down, lap times began to tighten up, with Quartararo and Morbidelli both dipping into the 1’29s, but Marc Márquez stayed in control at the top, using the same rear tyre he started the session with. Where Marc sometimes looked like he was overriding the GP23, he seems very at ease on the GP25 – an ominous sign for his rivals.
