BMW’s new M 1000 RS brings M 1000 RR firepower to a naked layout, with production capped at 1,000 worldwide

BMW Motorrad has revealed the new M 1000 RS, a hypernaked built around the M 1000 RR superbike engine and aimed at riders chasing superbike output in a more upright package. BMW claims 160kW from its 999cc inline four, a 196kg ready to ride weight with a full tank, and a top speed of 283km/h, with production limited to 1,000 units worldwide.

Power comes from BMW’s water cooled, DOHC inline four with ShiftCam variable intake cam control. Output is listed at 160kW at 14,500rpm with 113Nm at 11,000rpm, with premium unleaded specified at 95 to 98 RON and peak output quoted with 98 RON. BMW lists a 0 to 100km/h time of 3.2 seconds.

The drivetrain runs a six speed gearbox with chain final drive and a mechanically operated multi plate anti hopping wet clutch. An M short stroke throttle is part of the standard equipment list, along with Gearshift Assistant Pro.

The M 1000 RS uses an aluminium composite bridge frame with the engine acting as a partially load bearing member. Wheelbase is 1467mm, trail is 97.6mm and steering head angle is listed at 65.8 degrees. Fuel capacity is 16.5 litres and seat height is 850mm, with BMW also noting the seat is 20mm higher than the M 1000 R.

Suspension is electronically controlled via Dynamic Damping Control. Up front is a 45mm upside down fork with electronic rebound and compression damping and electronic preload adjustment. At the rear is an aluminium underslung double sided swingarm with a DDC shock. Suspension travel is 120mm front and 117mm rear.

Brakes are BMW’s M package with 320mm twin front floating discs and radial mounted four piston calipers, plus a 220mm rear disc with a single piston caliper. Wheels are 17 inch M carbon items, shod with a 120/70 ZR17 front and 200/55 ZR17 rear.

BMW lists Riding Modes Pro, ABS Pro and DTC traction control as standard, with Dynamic Damping Control managing the suspension. The standard equipment list also includes tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, heated grips and keyless ride.

The M 1000 RS is due to arrive in dealerships from March 2027, with production capped at 1,000 units worldwide. German pricing is listed at 40,000 euro including VAT, with Australian pricing and local allocation still to be confirmed.
