McMartin Racing go 1 – 2 at SMSP as Josh Waters takes the round victory, Roulstone stages dramatic fightback

Sydney Motorsport Park delivered perfect conditions under lights, and the cooler track had the field circulating at a fierce pace from the outset. Josh Waters was chasing another win after taking race one earlier, but Harrison Voight, Cameron Dunker, Mike Jones and Anthony West were all determined to turn the tables in the second encounter.

Waters launched well again, but Voight once more owned the inside into Turn 1 to grab the early lead. Jonathan Nahlous was immediately on the move too, pushing past Waters to make the opening order Voight, Nahlous, Waters, Cru Halliday and Dunker, with Jacob Roulstone charging up to sixth after a sharp start. Voight had a moment out of Turn 10 but held it together, and Nahlous looked to have great pace early as he pressured the McMartin Ducati at the front.

Voight and Nahlous traded the fastest laps in the 1:29s as the lead fight threatened to ignite, but it ended abruptly on lap four when Nahlous lost the front and crashed, a huge disappointment after his confident start.

The incident handed Voight clean air and he took full advantage, quickly building close to a two-second buffer back to Waters and maintaining relentless speed at the front. Waters settled into second with a gap over Halliday, while the next contest formed behind them as Glenn Allerton worked his way forward and began reeling in Roulstone, dragging Dunker into the fight as well.

Allerton eventually forced his way past at Turn 2, but Roulstone refused to yield and attacked back at Turn 5, the Honda man braking spectacularly deeply into turns as they traded positions. West entered the battle late after getting by Jones, and the battle for fourth turned into an absolute knife fight as Allerton and West repeatedly swapped positions, with Dunker slipping by both of them after an optimistic move by Allerton ran both Ducati riders wide.

Up front, Voight blasted to victory 4 seconds clear of Waters, with Halliday completing the podium in third. The fierce scrap behind Roulstone gave him the precious few bikelengths he needed to grab 4th, while West mugged Dunker on the line for 5th. Allerton came home seventh with Jones, Hamod and Favelle rounding out the top 10.

With his 1–2 finishes, Waters took the round victory and moved to second overall in the ASBK points standings, showing the youngsters they’ve got a fight on their hands if they want to take his crown. Voight’s race two win means he still extends his championship lead to 14 points heading into round 3 at Tailem bend in May.
