McMartin Ducati rider takes the round win at Phillip Island as the next generation take over

With spitting rain pattering down, Harrison Voight nailed the start from Josh Waters and it was McMartin Racing 1-2, but Jacob Roulstone wasn’t interested in sitting back, shoving it up the inside at Turn 4.

By Lap 2, Voight was already trying to break the field early and Roulstone was giving chase hard. Behind them, Waters got swamped at Turn 1, passed by Mike Jones and Cameron Dunker, and suddenly the “usual suspects” had their hands full. By lap 3 Dunker and Jones had reeled Roulstone in, but Voight was already over two seconds clear — his pace was electric.

Lap 4 flipped the order behind the leader. Anthony West came through on Roulstone, and Roulstone got pushed back to fifth as Dunker and Jonathan Nahlous also sliced through at Turn 1. West looked determined to finish the round on the podium for DesmoSport Ducati, until Nahlous started making moves — picking off Dunker, then West by Lap 6.

Lap 7 saw West strike back at the blindingly fast Hayshed corner while Roulstone regrouped and picked off Waters to rejoin the fight. But on Lap 8, with Voight 4.5 seconds up the road and seemingly in cruise control, Phillip Island threw a spanner in the works.

The final laps turned nasty as the rain started to fall in earnest. Voight held up his hand looking for the race to be stopped, Dunker dropped right back and lost second to Nahlous, before Roulstone came from nowhere on the last lap to nail Dunker into Turn 1. They swapped back and forth through Lukey Heights and MG and it was another drag to the line out of Turn 12, with Dunker just stealing third on the stripe.

Up front, Voight won comfortably from Nahlous to make it two wins from three starts. Dunker edged Roulstone for third, West beat Waters for fifth, then Allerton, Favelle, Jones and Hamod rounded out the top 10. The next generation have thrown down the gauntlet — Voight with the round win, Roulstone performing heroics on the Honda and Dunker leading the way for Yamaha with 3 podiums from 3 starts.

The stage is set for an enthralling battle at Sydney Motorsports Park for round 2 onMarch  27 –  28.
