GRT Yamaha rider was one of several fallers in Turn 2 Balaton incident

Remy Gardner has officially been ruled out of further competition following a crash on the first lap of Race 1 at the Hungarian round of the World Superbike Championship. The multi-rider incident occurred at Turn 2 during the race at the Balaton circuit. Gardner was promptly evaluated at the track’s medical facility, where he was diagnosed with a back contusion and a possible concussion. As a precaution, he was transported to a hospital for further assessment and subsequently deemed unfit to participate in Sunday’s remaining races.

Earlier this week, it had been announced that Gardner would be staying with the GRT Yamaha team through the 2026 and 2027 seasons, adding more significance to his absence from the weekend’s competition. He was one of three riders unable to join the race restart after the crash—the others being Iker Lecuona and Ryan Vickers, who couldn’t rejoin in time due to their machines not being ready following the incident.

Lecuona was also assessed at the medical centre following the crash and was diagnosed with a left wrist fracture, and will miss out on Sunday’s racing as well. Gerloff was declared unfit for Race 1 with a lower back injury and will be further evaluated at hospital.

Andrea Iannone received a double long-lap penalty for careless riding, which was served early in the restarted event and led to a thirteenth-place finish.
