Roadbike sales up in 2014

the overall figure representing a 2.2 percent drop compared to 2013 (113,289), roadbikes continued to grow in popularity.

The amount of roadbikes taking to Aussie roads continued to increase, with 44,530 units purchased in 2014, an increase of 1.5 percent on the 2013 figure of 43,724. Roadbikes now account for 39.9 percent of the total Australian motorcycle sales market.

Honda was the leading seller of roadbikes in 2014, shifting 9011 units. The Japanese motorcycle manufacturer was pushed all the way by Harley-Davidson, which sold 8577 roadbikes – just 434 less than Honda.

Sales of its Ninja 300 helped Kawasaki to third place overall (5964), with Yamaha fourth (5290) and Suzuki fifth (3017).

Honda was also at the top of the tree in overall sales, selling 24,866 new motorcycles, ATVs and scooters in 2014. Yamaha was second best overall, selling 20,394 motorcycles, with Kawasaki third (11,024), Suzuki fourth (9745) and Harley-Davidson fifth (8577).

In 2013, scooter sales declined 12.4 percent compared to 2012. The trend only became worse in 2014, with sales sliding a further 19.7 percent. Just 7676 scooters were sold during 2014 compared to 9565 in 2013.
