Technology. I love it and I hate it. One piece of equipment that has piqued my interest is the NuViz heads-up display and communication device. NuViz, an American company based in San Diego, has released an attachment that fits to the chin bar of your helmet which not only allows you to take calls, listen to music, receive telemetry information and map directions, but it beams visual information just below your line of sight and the whole lot is controlled via a handlebar-mounted remote.

The full-colour image from NuViz’ heads-up display is said to float about four metres in front of the eye, keeping your eyes where you need them to be. The thing even doubles as a POV-action and stills camera.

Sound too good to be true? That’s what we’re here to find out. There have been a few similar products to hit the market which have over promised and under delivered, and I know a few people will be gun shy, especially considering its $US699 price tag.

After the unboxing, I hit the first snag. I had just taken delivery of an AGV K-5S lid and it’s sculpted front section didn’t allow me to fit the NuViz device. Strike one. This is where no Australian distributor is a problem – you won’t know for sure if it fits your helmet – however, it does come with a 30-day return policy as well as a one-year warranty.

The solution was to fit it to my Shark Vision R, and now I’ve finally got it on, first impressions are very positive.

Personally, I find my in-helmet comms invaluable in the city for navigation, so I’m really keen to find out how well the heads-up display works on the NuViz. Stay tuned.
