Archie McDonald set for World Baggers title showdown

‘Mad Dog’ heads to the Austrian finale this weekend with the chance to seal the inaugural FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup, but some heavy-hitting draft-ins will make the battle even tougher

Archie McDonald heads to Austria this weekend with the inaugural FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup title within reach, carrying a seven point lead into the final round of the season at the Red Bull Ring.

With one round and two races left to decide the championship, McDonald leads the standings on 174 points for Joe Rascal Racing, narrowly ahead of teammate Eric Granado on 167, while NITI Racing pair Oscar Gutierrez Iglesias and Andrea Iannone remain in contention on 148 and 147 respectively. It leaves the first ever Bagger World Cup set for a tense finish, with four riders still mathematically in the hunt but McDonald holding the advantage.

McDonald has been one of the revelations of the season from the moment the new category got underway, making history by winning the championship’s first ever race at the Circuit of the Americas. In a field stacked with experienced international names, he has quickly established himself as a genuine force in the new series, adapting impressively to the 2100cc Harley-Davidson machinery and learning the unfamiliar track layouts quickly.

His speed has been backed by consistency across the year, but McDonald’s season has not been without serious adversity as well. In April Archie suffered personal heartbreak with the tragic passing of his brother Toby, whom Archie described as his biggest fan. Rather than step away, McDonald was determined to honour his brother while racing, using the platform to support mental health awareness and encourage others to check in on those around them.

At Assen he walked away from a frightening high speed crash in practice after the bike pitched him toward the fence at around 170km/h, escaping without broken bones and keeping his championship campaign alive despite being left battered and sore. He bounced back in style at Silverstone, paying tribute to his brother after taking an emotional Race 2 victory.

There will be a change inside the Joe Rascal Racing line up for the final round, with James Rispoli stepping in for Jordi Torres, who has prior commitments in the FIM Endurance World Championship. Rispoli is no stranger to the team, having been at the season opener at COTA and later acting as team manager for the squad at Silverstone, and he brings strong Bagger experience of his own. The 35 year old American has already scored a podium in the 2026 King of the Baggers series, has previously won races in the category, and also boasts British Supersport podiums and AMA Supersport titles on his resume.

Kyle Wyman is another rider likely to have a strong say in how the weekend unfolds. The double King of the Baggers champion will make his debut as an independent wildcard entry with Wegner Automotive x KWR, bringing his extensive experience to the international stage.

For McDonald, the Austrian finale is the chance to cap a remarkable debut season in the category. He came into the championship as a young rider with strong credentials, but not many outside Australia would have predicted just how quickly he would become a title contender in his first year on the world stage.
