Razgatlioglu Romps to Sprint Win After First Corner Drama

Bulega taken out as Bimota take their first podium in 25 years

A clash between Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) and leader Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) saw them both off at the first corner of the ten-lap Superpole race.

An attempted inside line pass into T1 saw Bassani run out of lean angle and crash, taking Bulega with him. With the track wide open after this early drama, Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) went on to win by 4.2 seconds from Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team).

That second place was the entire new bimota project’s first podium – leaving the Italian-based manufacturer both in the depths of depression and floating along in elation at their literal home round.

Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) pushed his way to third place, but some 1.8 seconds behind the number 22 bimota. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team Ducati) was off the podium in fourth, with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) fifth and Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team Ducati) sixth. Bautista was once again coming home with a whet sail, but once again coming from too far back to make it count.

A confidence-booster for Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) saw him seventh, one position up on Aussie rider Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team). Remy made a an excellent start and briefly held fourth, but didn’t have the pure pace to maintain a top five position.

HRC Honda pairing Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge completed the top ten, with Garrett Gerloff (Kawasaki WorldSBK Team) and his lone Ninja taking 11th place.

Bulega’s DNF means his championship points advantage to Toprak falls to just 14 points heading into this afternoon’s full length race.
