Turk rider pips Moreira by razor thin margin, Agius climbs from 13th to 4th
Moreira grabbed the holeshot off the line, but it was Öncü who wasted no time taking control, diving into the lead with Baltus slotting into third through the reverse corkscrew. Behind them, chaos erupted as Holgado took out his own teammate Alonso in a dramatic first-lap incident for CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team. The collision split the field, creating a sizeable gap between the leading trio and the rest of the pack.
Baltus hit the front on lap two with a clean move on Öncü at Turn 3, while Canet, quickly up to pace, posted the fastest lap from fourth. Agius was having a strong start in seventh, looking aggressive early. On the third lap, Canet executed a brilliant pass on Moreira through the fast Turns 8 and 9 to take third. Moreira struck back into Turn 1 a lap later, but Canet immediately responded, reclaiming the position into Turn 2.
Agius, meanwhile, was the fastest rider on track behind the lead trio, but struggled to draft past Salac and Lopez due to his taller stature. Up front, Öncü muscled past Canet again on lap nine to retake second, while Gonzalez, after starting in 19th, had already climbed to ninth in a remarkable recovery ride. Moreira had regrouped and launched past Canet into Turn 1, dragging himself back into the podium battle.
On lap ten, Agius momentarily passed Salac, but the Czech rider countered immediately. Salac made a move on Lopez in the final corner on lap twelve, with Agius trying to follow through into Turn 5. A slight touch on Lopez’s rear tyre forced him to back off, narrowly avoiding disaster. One lap later, Agius got the job done, passing Lopez cleanly, while Gonzalez moved up to eighth with passes on Roberts and Ramirez. At the same time, Öncü finally retook the lead from Baltus and began pushing hard, with Canet starting to fade just as Agius found cleaner air.
Lap fourteen saw Öncü post the fastest lap, stretching his lead as Agius carved his way past Salac for fifth. Moreira then set an even faster lap, diving inside Baltus for second, with Agius now closing the gap to the podium fight after halving the distance to Canet.
Öncü stretched his advantage into lap sixteen, nearly one second clear of Moreira, while Agius lined up Canet and made a decisive pass at Turn 16 into fourth. With the podium trio too far ahead, Agius could only hope for a late race shake-up, and Moreira, relentless in his pursuit, had somehow closed the gap to Öncü once more, taking huge risks on the brakes and pushing his front Michelin to the absolute edge.
Everything came down to the final lap. Moreira clocked the fastest lap and pounced on Öncü at Turn 5, making what looked like the race-winning move. Both riders spun their rear tyres exiting Turn 12, as Moreira frantically tried to build a gap as they approached the final corner where Öncü’s was super strong. Moreira led into the final turn, but Oncu let his KTM drift wide, squaring off the turn on exit and blasting past Moreira on the run to the finish to win by the narrowest margin in Moto2 history.
Baltus held on for a solid third, ahead of Agius who charged from 13th to 4th. Salac claimed fifth ahead of Canet, who faded late with grip issues. Roberts and Ramirez made late moves to edge past Gonzalez, pushing the championship leader down to ninth. Lopez, who looked strong early, faded badly to tenth with tyre woes.
It was another sensational Moto2 classic—hard racing, tight battles, and a finish that will be replayed for years to come. With Öncü’s stunning victory and Moreira’s near-miss at the line, the championship remains delicately poised. Manuel Gonzalez, despite finishing ninth, holds onto the lead in the standings with 118 points—now tied with Aron Canet. Diogo Moreira’s strong second-place finish sees him climb to third overall with 90 points, just ahead of Baltus and Dixon. Senna Agius edges closer to the top five, sitting sixth in the standings with 77 points heading into the Mugello round where he’ll no doubt be strong again.
