McDonald edges out teammate Mahaffy in thrilling Supersport finale to complete clean sweep
Race 1 of the 2025 ASBK Supersport category at Morgan Park Raceway saw A. McDonald (Yamaha) take a commanding win. He was followed by fellow Yamaha riders Edwards and Mahaffy, who completed the podium in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Kawasaki made a strong showing with Simpson and Nelson placing 4th and 6th respectively, with Bramich squeezing into fifth.
In Race 2, Archie McDonald completed a flawless weekend in claiming his second victory following a red-flagged opening segment.
The original race was filled with action until a highside crash for Marcus Hamod at SW Motech Corner brought out the red flag. At the time, Stop & Seal Yamaha teammates McDonald and Jack Mahaffy were controlling the front, with Olly Simpson and Tommy Edwards scrapping for third. Levi Russo also crashed out in the first outing, while Hayden Nelson dropped to the back after an early incident before beginning his charge forward.
Upon restart, Mahaffy launched into the lead from McDonald, with Simpson holding third briefly. However, Edwards soon broke free, passing Simpson and rapidly closing on the front-runners. In the final laps, McDonald made his move on Mahaffy did his best to hang on but in the end McDonald wheelied across the line for a relatively comfortable victory.
Edwards crossed in third a mere 0.002s behind Mahaffy, while Hayden Nelson recovered brilliantly to finish fourth after dropping to 10th early on, followed by teammate Simpson in fifth.
Further back, Jake Farnsworth (6th), Corey Turner (7th), and Cameron Swain (8th) all put in solid rides in a highly competitive field, while Will Nassif and Tom Bramich rounded out the top ten.
Celebrating his two wins with a backflip off the pit wall that was much sketchier than his race performances, McDonald has slashed the gap in the championship standings to just 26 points behind leader Mahaffy, setting up a mouthwatering title fight.
Olly Simpson remains in the title hunt, sitting third with 154 points, while Hayden Nelson (130 pts) and Tom Bramich (129 pts) round out the top five in a tightly contested battle as the 2025 ASBK Supersport Championship intensifies.
