Agius fights back from double long lap penalties as late chaos ends Sachsenring Moto2 race early

The German Moto2 race delivered high drama from lights out, with Senna Agius immediately hit with a double long lap penalty after jumping the start. It was Arbolino who led the early laps ahead of Baltus and Öncü, while Agius initially slotted into fourth before serving his penalty and tumbling down the order — a wasted chance for the Aussie who had shown strong pace.

Up front, Öncü took over the lead, while Diogo Moreira lit up the timing screens with a storming ride from P25 to P5, setting fastest laps along the way. His charge, however, ended in disaster on Lap 16 when a lunge on Dixon went wrong, forcing him off track. As he rejoined the track, he was collected at high speed by Alonso — both riders crashing out hard.

Behind, Baltus closed in on Öncü while Gonzalez and Vietti quietly moved inside the top six. The race was ultimately halted for good on Lap 21 after Ramirez overshot Turn 1 and wiped out Arenas, puncturing the air fence and forcing a red flag with just a few laps remaining.

Victory went to Deniz Öncü, who kept calm amid escalating chaos to take his first win in Moto2. Baltus claimed a strong second, with Jake Dixon rounding out the podium. Gonzalez and Vietti capitalised on the late incidents to finish fourth and fifth, while Agius recovered to 11th after his early penalties — but it could’ve been so much more.

In the end, a wild and attritional race reshuffled the deck, with Öncü, Baltus, and Dixon surviving the madness to lock out the podium and Gonzalez, Vietti, and Roberts rounding out a competitive top six.

Gonzalez extends his narrow lead at the top of the championship table to 172 points despite finishing off the podium, 9 points ahead of Canet in second and 44 points ahead of Diogo Moreira in third.
