THE SPANISH INQUISITION: ROUND 3 2020 NOSHOWGP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP JEREZ, SPAIN

Nobody expected such an unusual result as Maverick Viñales celebrates his first win of 2020

Even by the standards of a season that will be talked about for years to come, the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez will stand out. Maverick Viñales won, and deservedly so, but it is what happened behind the man on the Yamaha that prompted the most raised eyebrows.

After cruising through the practice and qualifying sessions, Viñales looked like the man to beat, and so it proved. It is not so much that his challengers fell back but the manner in which they did so that made the rest of the MotoGP paddock wonder what on earth was going on.

The speed of the Ducatis, and pretty much anything else, was muted by some, well, obscure decisions that saw rider after rider penalised before the race could even take shape. Even now, well after the event, questions are being asked, surrounding a combination of seemingly hard to understand calls by race officials.
