John Lytras has been awarded the RK Chains Samurai Trophy for the 2022 season, presented to the most improved and most outstanding young talent in the ASBK paddock. Lytras showed raw speed during 2022, picking up race wins at Queensland Raceway, Wakefield Park and Morgan Park. When he didn’t have the speed to win, he kept calm under pressure and maximised his points to clinch the title.

“Thanks to Link International and AMCN for organising the award, it was really unexpected and it’s great to have the hard work of last year recognised like this,” said a beaming Lytras. “It certainly wasn’t easy, I’d also like to thank all the people that have been behind me as well, I really appreciate it.”

The trophy was presented by 1993 Samurai Trophy winner and double World Superbike Champion, Troy Corser.

“It’s a real pleasure to present this award,” Corser said. “I remember the impact it had on my career and the trophy still has pride of place at home.”

AMCN’s Matt O’Connell said the impact of winning the award will hit home in a couple of days.

“John showed his speed at the right moments last year, but he also held it together when it mattered most. I know he will go home and look up the company he is now in, it’s pretty mind blowing.”

Past winners of the prestigious award include Mick Doohan (1988), Darryl Beattie (1990), Anthony Gobert (1994) and Josh Brookes (2001).
