Anthony West tops the time sheets, Herfoss to miss Round 1

After the opening Day of ABSK practice at Phillip Island for season 2025, Anthony West and the Addicted to Track team have come out on top, finishing just clear of current champ Josh Waters on his McMartin Ducati V4 R. For West the result will provide a massive shot of confidence and validates the teams pre-season development work. Waters came into the round with injury concerns, but his lap time shows his recently broken collar bone will not be slowing him down at all.

The pair were lapping in the 1min 31.4 bracket in the morning session, over a second clear of Yamaha Racing Team’s Mike Jones in third.

Josh Waters was second fastest

What does this mean for the races this weekend? Obviously, Waters is fit enough to win after entering the round with injury concerns and limited testing. ASBK races are relatively short – and now West has put himself in the frame for victory after showing at recent rounds that if he gets a sniff, anything is possible. Aussie crowds have a long memory and they love watching Westy battle at the front at Phillip Island.

The other big news this morning is the absence of Troy Herfoss. Herfoss reportedly couldn’t work out contract terms in time with Penrite team boss Deon Coote, with Coote saying there is no hope of getting anyone on the bike this weekend.

It’s early days – but at the opening round that is held alongside the World Superbikes, early results matter. The timetable is condensed and sessions can be held early morning or late afternoon. Every rider has to be out of the blocks fast – there isn’t much time to find solutions.

Mike Jones was 3rd on his Yamaha R1

In the podium frame was Glenn Allerton on the Superbike Associates Ducati V4 R. Allerton and his team have been working overtime to have that bike dialled in, having only received their MoTeC ECU wiring harness two weeks ago. To see him this far up the time sheet is an ominous sign.

Tom Edwards, making his ASBK Superbike debut for the newly formed Motoschool team also impressed, particularly given the early morning session on Dunlop tyres.

Max Stauffer and Broc Pearson were behind him, both will be hoping to improve as Stauffer adapts to life in the Yamaha factory team and Pearson comes to grips with the MoTeC ECU on his Desmosport Ducati.

Cam Dunker (now riding for MotoGo Yamaha), John Lytras (a Yamaha privateer) and JJ Nahlous (another privateer) rounded out the top ten.

Matty Walters (Hino Newcastle Aprilia) made his ASBK return, back on the Aprilia with a decent opening session.

Noted outside the top ten were all three Stop and Seal entries. The team recently tested at the Motul Summer Night Series at SMSP and all three were having trouble getting a good feeling with the Michelin rubber. Expect them to rebound as they find a solution.
