Researchers at the University of Western Australia are calling on riders nationwide to take part in a quick anonymous online game that could help reveal why motorcycles can be overlooked on the road
“How did they not see me?”
It’s a question many riders have asked after a close call on the road.
Now, researchers from the University of Western Australia are asking whether motorcycle riders can help answer it.
The research team is investigating how attention and situational awareness influence what road users notice – and sometimes don’t notice – while driving. To do that, they’re looking for thousands of Australians to take part in a nationwide road safety study, with motorcycle riders playing a key role.
Using a free online game called What’s Your Road IQ?, participants complete four short mini games that explore different aspects of attention, awareness and reaction time. Developed by Australian game studio Arludo, the game takes around 10 minutes to complete and turns everyday gameplay into valuable road safety research.
That’s where motorcycle riders come in.
While the study is open to anyone who drives, rides or cycles, researchers are particularly keen for the riding community to get involved. The more motorcycle riders who take part, the better researchers can understand attention and awareness from the perspective of the road users most affected when motorcycles go unnoticed.
At the end of the game, you’ll also receive your personalised Road IQ score and see how you performed compared with other participants. But the real outcome is knowing you’ve contributed to research that aims to improve our understanding of attention, awareness and motorcycle safety.
Participation is free, takes around 10 minutes and requires no sign-up.
