In Round 2 of the ASBK at Sydney Motorsport Park, Mike Jones mastered the tricky conditions to secure pole position, while reigning champion Josh Waters faces an uphill battle from row three.
Yamaha Racing Team’s Mike Jones pulled off a consistent day of qualifying at Sydney Motorsport Park to claim pole position for the second round of the 2025 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship.
Jones topped the opening two SW-Motech Superbike free practice sessions, but it was McMartin Racing’s Josh Waters that topped the third session and was the only rider to dip into the 1 minute 29 second bracket.
Josh Waters topped session three with the quickest time in practice.
Similar to the previous two years, rain is predicted for this weekend and the qualifying sessions were held in light drizzle. This didn’t deter Jones who withstood the challenge from a resurgent Cru Halliday (Stop and Seal – Yamaha). Broc Pearson (Desmosport Ducati) took the final spot on the front row with the top three covered by a mere three tenths of a second.
After Halliday, the next big surprise was Jack Favelle, the rookie impressing in all sessions to qualify at the head of the second row ahead of Cam Dunker (MotoGo Yamaha) and the second YRT entry of Max Stauffer.
The next surprise was reigning champion Waters, unfazed to be back on the third row after showing strong race pace in practice. Joining him there is JJ Nahlous (Complete AV – Yamaha) and Addicted to Track’s Anthony West.
In Kawasaki Supersport, Archie McDonald heads up the field with Stop and Seal teammate Jack Mahaffy in second and local Jake Farnsworth (Worth Racing Developments) completing the front row.
Last night saw the running of the first Race and Road Supersport 300 race with Valentino Knezovic (Excite Motorsport) taking out the opening eight lap event with Hudson Thompson (I&K Excavations) second and Jordy Simpson (Simpson Signs) third.
Knezovic won the opening SSP race ahead of Thompson and Simpson in very slick conditions.
In other completed races, Chaz Williams took out the Oceania Junior Cup event while Beau Beaton won the Superbike Masters.
The action continues this evening with the warm-up sessions beginning at 2:40pm and racing at 3:35pm. The final night races will be televised live on SBS and Stan, beginning at 7:30pm.
