Leather race suits are not something you replace every day so I was stoked when I picked up this new Ixon Vortex 3 the other day and tried it on for the first time.

The suit is made from high-grade leather with four-way stretch nylon panels on the torso, sleeves, shoulders, inseam and legs making for a comfortable fit and ease of movement. These feature a Lycra lining to improve movement.

There’s a removable soft-mesh body warmer for cool-weather riding that can be unzipped when things heat up, while the aero hump has the facility to hold a 500ml hydration bladder with an outlet in the top for a drinking tube.

On the safety front, the Vortex 3 features the same shoulder, elbow and knee protectors used in MotoGP race suits. There are also ventilated hip proterctors, pockets to accept optional chest protection, double layer leather on the seat, padded coccyx protector and more.

The zips (main, wrists and calves) are all self-locking items while there’s a Velcro closure at the collar, which is a comfy neoprene item.

The knee sliders are attached to large Velcro panels so you can position them to your liking, and all the seams and stitching looks to be
top notch.

I’m hanging out to get on the track to give the Vortex 3 a run and I’ll keep you updated on its comfort and performance, hopefully without testing its protective qualities.
