All-new boxer-powered roadster blends aggressive styling, increased performance, and touring versatility with next-gen tech

BMW Motorrad has pulled the wraps off the all-new R 1300 R, an extensively updated version of its iconic boxer-powered roadster. Combining bolder styling with significant technical upgrades, the latest evolution of the R series aims to deliver sharper performance, greater customisation, and improved versatility.

According to Christof Lischka, Head of Development at BMW Motorrad, the R 1300 R takes the roadster platform “to a whole new level,” focusing on riding dynamics without departing from BMW’s traditional strengths in comfort and touring capability.

Here’s everything you need to know about BMW’s next-generation naked boxer.

A Fresh Look with Four Distinct Flavours

Visually, the R 1300 R marks a departure from its predecessor with a leaner, more aggressive profile underscored by an octagonal LED headlight and chiselled bodywork. Available in four variants, the range includes:

  • Base model in Snapper Rocks Blue Metallic
  • Exclusive in Racing Blue Metallic
  • Performance (sport package) in Lightwhite
  • Option 719 Kilauea, a glossy Blackstorm Metallic finish with premium parts

The new Performance variant adds short hand levers, performance footrests, a sport seat and screen, engine spoiler and sport rubber.

Boosted Boxer Muscle

The R 1300 R employs the same potent boxer engine that powers the new GS range, with identical outputs of 107kW (145hp) at 7,750rpm and 149Nm of torque at 6,500rpm – a significant gain on the R 1250 R’s 136hp and 143Nm. Max revs are bumped to 9,000rpm, with improved smoothness and fuel efficiency thanks to BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing technology.

Three riding modes—Rain, Road and Eco—come standard, with the optional Riding Modes Pro expanding the suite to include Dynamic and Dynamic Pro. Riders also benefit from standard engine drag torque control (MSR), designed to stabilise the rear wheel during aggressive downshifting.

Next-Gen Chassis and Suspension

Underpinning the new R 1300 R is a completely redesigned chassis. The new steel sheet metal main frame and die-cast aluminium rear subframe shed weight while improving rigidity and mass centralisation. The result is sharper handling, reduced steering effort and better cornering stability. BMW has also introduced lighter 17-inch wheels that save over 1.4kg in rotational mass.

Suspension gets a major upgrade with a new 47mm USD fork up front and revised EVO Paralever rear setup. For the first time on a production motorcycle, the optional Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system allows the fork’s spring rate to be electronically adjusted mid-ride, alongside damping and rear preload compensation—great news for riders tackling variable terrains or different luggage loads.

Smart Shifting and Safety Options

BMW’s automated shift assistant (ASA) is offered as optional equipment, enabling fully automatic clutch operation for seamless gear changes—either manually via the foot lever or in a fully automatic mode.

In terms of safety and comfort, the R 1300 R remains ahead of the curve. Riding Assistant, another optional extra, bundles active cruise control and front collision warning, while adaptive cornering lights—available via Headlight Pro—ensure better visibility through bends.

Enhanced Ergonomics with Touring Versatility

Despite the performance emphasis, BMW hasn’t forgotten long-haul duties. The newly designed ergonomic triangle (handlebar, footrest, seat) places the rider closer to the front for better connection and control. There are also optional comfort handlebars and a wide range of seat height options available (all below 790mm).

An all-new electrified luggage system is available with interior lighting, along with a USB-C charging port and electronic central locking. There’s also a strap-free tank bag that clicks into place via a tank ring for further practicality.
