Part workshop, part future biker hangout, Castambul Classic Motorcycles is carving out a home for Adelaide riders who love their machines old-school.

I came across Castambul Classic Motocycles when researching the ‘Hoarders & Collectors‘ story last year. Apart from the mouth-watering collection of Ciarán Carruthers located in Adelaide’s northeastern suburbs, conveniently close to the famous Gorge Road, there is now a specialist service and repair facility under the same roof.

Nathan and Graeme have carved out a corner of the very full warehouse for themselves, installed a hoist and bench, plus rolling tool chests and are busy nurturing Carruthers’ many machines. But even with around 200 bikes right there in front of them, there is still room for a side hustle.

Seeing how I had a few niggles with my own bikes, I thought I’d bring one or two in for a look over. So, my Road King got a new starter and the flimsy blinkers on my Guzzi were replaced. Job done!

“We’re a small workshop specialising in 70s, 80s, 90s and into the 2000s bikes,” Nathan explains, “We cover service, repairs, diagnostic work, and do a bit of detailing. We may offer full frame-up restorations in the future.

“To give you a bit of an example, we recently did a complete overhaul and tune on an old Honda RVF400 that hadn’t been running for a few years, plus we recently got a Honda VTR 1000 SP2 running that had a rusted tank and seized fuel pump.

“We work on quite old GPZ 900s and have a few customers who bring those specifically to us.”

The boys clearly love their old pre-2000 bikes, just like their patron Ciarán Carruthers.

The medium-term plan is to create a bikers’ community hub where riders can mingle, get some decent food and drink while they contemplate their next ride. In the meantime …
