Aussies star’s emphatic Mile High win cuts Ken Roczen’s advantage to a single point, sending the 450SX Supercross title to a winner-takes-all finale in Salt Lake City
The 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship made its second to last stop in Denver for Round 16 of the SMX World Championship, where Empower Field at Mile High hosted another crucial chapter in a remarkably close 450SMX title battle. With the championship on the line, Honda HRC Progressive rider Hunter Lawrence delivered exactly what he needed, taking a decisive victory and shifting momentum away from Progressive Insurance Cycle Gear Suzuki’s Ken Roczen ahead of a season finale that will now decide the title between the two.

The 20 minutes plus one lap 450SMX main event began with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado grabbing the holeshot, with Lawrence right behind him and Eli Tomac in third for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. Tomac, returning from injury in front of his home crowd in Colorado, made a promising start, while reigning champion Cooper Webb settled into fourth for Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing and Roczen followed in fifth with the red plate for the first time this year.

Lawrence wasted no time taking charge, attacking early and moving into the lead on lap two. Webb advanced to third, while Roczen climbed to fourth after Tomac stalled and dropped back through the field. Once out front, Lawrence made the most of clean air and quickly opened a gap, forcing Roczen to respond. The Suzuki rider passed Webb and then Prado to reach second, but by then Lawrence had already built a lead of around 4.5 seconds with just under 17 minutes remaining.

As the two leaders edged away, the fight for third became one of the race’s highlights. Prado, Webb and Tomac traded places before Tomac recovered impressively from his earlier issue to move into podium contention shortly after halfway. At the front, though, Lawrence remained untouchable. The Australian stretched his advantage to nearly 10 seconds and kept increasing it, leaving Roczen with no way back.

Lawrence sealed his fifth win of the season with a commanding 13.2-second margin over Roczen. Tomac completed the podium in third, marking his ninth top-three finish of the year despite having missed the previous two rounds. It was also the 111th Supercross podium of Tomac’s career, drawing him level with Jeremy McGrath for second on the all-time list.

The result means just one point separates Roczen and Lawrence heading into the championship decider at Salt Lake City, with Roczen still narrowly in front. The pair are now level on race wins with five each and also share the lead for podiums with 12 apiece. Both riders are chasing their first premier class Supercross title. Webb is now out of contention after finishing 11th following a late crash involving Prado, leaving Lawrence and Roczen as the only two riders still in the hunt.

Hunter Lawrence – 1st Place
“It’s good. When I see the [30] second board go sideways I get so excited. Let’s go out, have fun, and do what I love to do. It couldn’t have been much better than that. I’m really happy. Let’s go to Salt Lake, baby.”
Ken Roczen – 2nd Place
“It was a great race, I’m honestly happy with it. I just wasn’t fast enough, all day really. I know I had a great lap in Qualifying, but Hunter [Lawrence] was on it all day. Once I got into second, I tried a little bit [to catch Lawrence] but I didn’t want to override because it was going to be a long Main Event. I just settled into second. We had a four-point lead, it’s one point now. It is what it is going into the last race. That’s most exciting for the fans, us, and everyone.”
Eli Tomac – 3rd Place
“I’m just glad to land on the podium for the Colorado fans. I was so bummed when I stalled in the sand. I was able to claw back and have some fun on this track. It was a good bounce back [from the miscue]. I’m just happy to be back for these last two rounds. I love being on the West Coast and we’ll try to go get another podium next week.”
