The Husqvarna Svartpilen 801 prototype has been revealed in images and video weeks ahead of the bike’s full unveiling and simultaneously the publication of European type-approval documents means the first key specs of the machine have been confirmed.

The use of the Svartpilen name is slightly surprising as the bike uses five-spoke alloy wheels – normally associated with the more street-oriented Vitpilen models – instead of the wires that other Svartpilens feature. However, the prototype does feature a tiny front cowl, like the Svartpilen 401, and knobbly tyres – albeit the latter because it’s been shown as an ice-racing-style bike, compete with metal studs through the tread.

What the new bike’s name does confirm is that it uses the 799cc version of KTM’s LC8c parallel twin engine rather than the 889cc variant used in the Husqvarna Norden 901. The new bike’s type-approval documents confirm that it puts out 77kW (103hp, 105PS) at 9250rpm, along with 87Nm of torque at 8000rpm. Those numbers are pretty much identical to the 790 Duke, which has the same engine.

Husqvarna says the new bike comes in at 181kg, although that might be without fuel as the type-approval paperwork – measured with a full tank – puts the figure at 191kg.

Like the KTM it’s derived from, the Svartpilen 801 is packed with tech. Expect lean-sensitive traction control and ABS as well as multiple riding modes – the 790 Duke has four – plus anti-wheelie and engine braking control. There’s a quickshifter, too.

The frame is straight from the KTM 790 and 890 Dukes, so like the engine it’s a generation behind the latest 990 Duke’s equipment, and the forks appear to be the same WP Apex 43mm components used on the 890 Duke. It’s harder to see, but the rear shock is also sure to be a WP Apex part.

It’s the same story with the brakes. The four-piston front calipers are Husqvarna-badged but look to be the same as the KTM-branded versions used on the Duke models, grabbling 300mm discs.

The big change from the 790 Duke is the styling, with the signature Vitpilen look that blends retro cues with modern proportions. The handlebar is higher and wider than that used on the KTM 790 Duke, which should make for a substantially different riding position and feeling despite the shared mechanical components. It’s a trick that Husqvarna’s other Duke-based Svartpilen and Vitpilen models have already managed to convincingly pull off.

That ’bar accounts for the Svartpilen 801’s 827mm width – broader than the 790 Duke – and its taller 1108mm height. There’s essentially no change in the overall length of 2126mm length or the wheelbase, which comes in at 1476mm to exactly match that of the 890 Duke.

A full unveiling, including the final colour schemes and complete technical information, is planned for 19 March.
