I must have caught Mrs Ed at a weak moment when I floated the idea of a multi-day two-up ride to northern NSW – because she agreed. However, there was one condition: a topbox that doubles as a backrest needed to be fitted to the  Yamaha MT-10 before we set off.

This request suited me perfectly as I had already ordered a genuine accessories rear carrier and 50-litre Top Case from Y Shop because I didn’t think there would be enough room in the soft side case set and tank bag (AMCN Vol 66 No 17) for all our gear. Y Shop also has a backrest for $98.39 which can be fitted to the topbox for added comfort.

As with all of the Y Shop parts we have fitted to our MT-10 long-termer so far, fitting the carrier and topbox was a straightforward exercise. The side case stays do need to be removed as the carrier shares the same mounting points. But all the required hardware and spacers are provided, so it doesn’t matter if you are fitting the stays and carrier as a pair or separately. Once again I had to remove the plastic seat surround and drill two holes, though thankfully this was nowhere near as nerve-racking as the first time, and I finished the whole job in under an hour. A special note to anyone rushing to their computer now to order a topbox, the barrel lock for additional security is sold separately. Without this you can securely close the lid of the topbox, but not lock it. It also means the topbox can’t be locked to the carrier.

Right, now all that’s done, let’s hit the road!
