Willowbank Motocross Track is open | SPORT

Willowbank Motocross Track is open at last. The privately owned track is on a 35-hectare site in a motorsport-zoned area featuring the Willowbank dragstrip, 40 minutes from Brisbane.

The surrounding land is mostly occupied by large mines with no residential areas within hearing distance.

Objective Property’s Paul McMahon said the area was perfect. “The area is zoned for motorsport, which meant that the site was code-assessable. The proximity to Willowbank raceway, and the fact that the neighbours are mostly mines means that noise will not be a problem for neighbours.

“We know a lot of parks that have tried to get up in the past have failed because of residents’ groups complaining, and this site was perfect because there were no complaints.” The track comes at a time when the precinct is seeing a $220million upgrade.

“The application was approved for construction of a motocross precinct with a number of different tracks and options, from kids to experienced riders,” McMahon said. “The property is strategically located in an area with limited residential dwellings, and will bring tourists and business to the Ipswich area.”

Being a private track, there are no membership fees or licence requirements. It is a pay-as-you-ride venue and a daily fee of $35-50 for seniors and $10-$35 for juniors is the only cost involved. The park currently offers a full size senior motocross track, stadium-cross style track, junior stadium track and pee wee track. However, following its opening Willowbank plans to gather feedback from riders and expand based upon the riders’ needs.

Park manager Anthony Bott said they had been conducting trial opens and the feedback from almost every rider was that they enjoyed their day a lot better when the tracks had been groomed. As a result, Willowbank MX has invested heavily in grooming tools and machinery, and will be dedicating time to grooming daily, just like thr riders. Daily preparation will mean a better riding experience, especially for safety.

“The other factor that Willowbank MX wants to avoid is overcrowding. Just turning up will not guarantee that you will be able to ride. “We are limiting numbers so that everyone has a good experience” said Mr Bott “It’s best to book online to secure your spot.”
