Treloar and Headland Claim the FIM Speedway Sidecar 1000cc World Cup at Gillman Speedway | SPORT

Darrin Treloar and Jesse Headland have showed what they’re made of and have won the FIM Speedway Sidecar 1000cc World Cup at Gillman Speedway.

The victory marked a perfect weekend for the duo as they did not drop a single heat or final. They also managed to win yesterday’s FIM Oceania Speedway Sidecar Championship. It all capped off a very successful event at Gillman with entertaining racing and a strong crowd in attendance.

It was always going to take an almighty effort to topple Treloar and Headland. Their machine looked as if it was on rails around the track. Although the victory looked easy, they threw everything they had to claim the win.

Throughout the 20 heats and two finals there was plenty of twists and turns. The 2017 Champions, Warren Monson / Andrew Summerhayes (AUS) had an up and down night and were knocked out in the B Final. They also suffered an unfortunate heat 11, when they jumped the start and were excluded from that heat, putting them on the back foot.

In the lead up to the finals, Treloar / Headland, Mark Mitchell / Tony Carter (AUS) and Trent Headland / Darryl Whetstone (AUS) had booked themselves right into the A Final and were all looking extremely strong.

In the B Final, it would be Andrew Buchanan / Denny Cox (NZ/AUS) to take the victory. After a restart, Buchanan and Cox finished just ahead of 2017 Champions, Monson and Summerhayes. It was a devastating result for the previous champions as they did not have the chance to defend their title in the A Final. Mick Headland / Brenton Kerr (France/AUS) finished third and Jamie Moohan / Bailey Ogilvie (NZ/AUS) would retire from the B Final.

With the A Final about to begin there was enormous excitement and it would be Treloar and Headland to get a fantastic start. They would take an extremely impressive victory ahead of Mitchell / Carter, Buchanan / Cox, and Headland / Whetstone.

As a result, Australia would take home the honors at the FIM Speedway Sidecar 1000cc World Cup at Gillman Speedway. The performance of Treloar would no doubt establish himself amongst the greats once again.

Gillman Speedway was a fantastic venue and track conditions were optimal throughout the event. The international flavor throughout the event was clearly evident and it was great to welcome competitors throughout the world to South Australia.

Treloar sharing “It’s a great result! There is a lot of behind the scenes work that people don’t get to see. It was a hard night and it took awhile to get the bike setup the way I wanted it. We are never completely happy but we got the result we wanted.

“This is probably the best bike I’ve ever had and I would like to thank all the machinists and welders that helped put it together. I would like to thank my swinger Jesse who makes all the difference.”

Headland saying; “Like Darrin was saying, we had a few setup issues at the start but the bike was awesome overall and the team did an awesome job.”
