Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi has claimed pole position for the Japanese Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Twin Ting Motegi circuit. The Italian was the only rider to dip into the 1m43s bracket during a frantic qualifying session that saw championship leader Marc Marquez blow three chances to claim pole position with small errors while on a fast lap.
Aussies Jack Miller (Honda) and Mike Jones (Ducati) performed well in Q1. Miller claimed 14th position in his first ride back from injury and Mike Jones, making his MotoGP debut, ended the session just 0.130 seconds behind his much more experienced Avintia Racing teammate Loris Baz to claim 21st position.
