Harley-Davidson has applied for trademark rights to the name ‘Sport Glide’ in a hint that a new model carrying that name is on the way soon.

It’s not the first time a Harley has been called Sport Glide. The original version, made from 1983-1993, was based on the pre-Dyna ‘FXR’ model and featured a fairing and hard panniers allied to what was then Harley’s sportiest chassis and the firm’s 1340cc V-twin. Its styling was relatively modern for a Harley, with a wraparound windscreen and a headlight that was faired-in behind a bubble of Perspex.

Although there’s no information yet the new version is likely to be a Dyna-based bagger, with a fairing and hard bags and price significantly lower than the Street Glide and Road Glide baggers that the firm already makes. Power is likely to be from the 103 cu in version of Harley’s twin-cam engine, as used in the rest of the Dyna range, while it would be no surprise if some of the original bike’s styling cues – particularly the distinctive headlight – were also revived for the new version.
