New bike sales slump after positive start | NEWS

The Aussie motorcycle industry suffered a blow after the third quarter of 2017, with the motorcycle, ATV and scooter market down almost eight percent on where it was this time last year, according to data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Hardest hit was the roadbike segment, which took a hit of over 5200 less units compared to the number of new roadies sold in the same period in 2016, representing a significant 14.9 per cent decline.

It’s still, however, the highest volume segment of the four segments; its 29,625 units represent 40.5 per cent of the total market. The biggest player within the roadbike segment is still Harley-Davidson, the American brand has moved 6526 units so far this year compared to Honda’s 5720, Yamaha’s 4211 and Kawasaki’s 3253.

Honda moved the most units across all segments, its 16,646 units trumping Yamaha’s 15,545. The two Japanese giants are by far the biggest players, with the next most popular brand – Kawasaki – moving less than half that of Yamaha, registering 6936 new bike sales in the nine months to September.

the off-road segment is down five percent on its 2016 third-quarter figure, the scooter segment suffered a 14 per cent decline, while the ATV and SXS sector grew slightly up 4.5 per cent, or 714 units, on the same period last year.

Of the motorcycles that were sold, these are the ones Aussie buyers are purchasing:
